Loyalty The first form of loyalty in The Kite Runner is Hassan's extreme loyalty towards Amir. Throughout the entire story Amir does things to Hassan that are very unkind and that deserve punishment, but Hassan never once retaliates. Some examples of his unbroken loyalty are when Amir doesn't save him in the alley and when Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan. Throughout their entire childhood Hassan always stood up for Amir, but when Hassan needed Amir during the incident in the alley he was not there for him. After this incident the two became very distant because Amir knew what he did was wrong. Even though he should have been punished for what he did, Hassan kept trying to rekindle their friendship to what it was before. Another way Hassan shows loyalty to Amir is by not retaliating when Amir throws pomegranates at him. Amir wants Hassan to respond by hitting him back to make everything right again, but Hassan hits himself with a pomegranate to show that he would never Harm Amir. The way Hassan responds to these two events shows that he has extreme loyalty to Amir. The second form of loyalty is Amir's loyalty to Sohrab in the end of the book. Even though Amir makes some questionable decisions throughout the story that show forms of betrayal he is loyal to Sohrab in the end. Amir shows his loyalty by never giving up on Sohrab. It first starts when he is searching for Sohrab in Afghanistan. He does not give up and leave the country until he ends up finding Sohrab and getting him out of the country. Amir also shows loyalty to Sohrab by not giving up until he finds a way to get Sohrab into the United States and adopt him as his child. The third time Amir shows loyalty to Shorab is how he treats Sohrab like his son and tries to connect with Sohrab even when Sohrab isn't speaking or treating Amir like a father. All three of these incidents show Amir's loyalty to Sohrab, because each time Amir is faced with huge challenges that could easily make him give up without any harm to himself. Instead he keeps looking and fighting until he makes everything better for Sohrab.

Betrayal Throughout The Kite Runner there are many different forms of betrayal. The form of betrayal that sticks out most to me is the way Amir betrays Hassan in the story. He betrays Hassan in many small ways during the story, but the biggest form of betrayal comes during the alley incident when Amir doesn't step up to Help Hassan. Throughout Hassan and Amir's entire childhood Hassan had always looked out for Amir and stepped up to help Amir whenever Amir was in trouble. As I stated before he was always loyal to Amir. The alley scene was the one time that Hassan needed Amir's loyalty to save him. Amir decided to betray Hassan which ultimately destroyed their friendship and made both of their lives completely differently than their lives could have been. The second form of betrayal in The Kite Runner is Baba and Rahim Khan's betrayal to Hassan and Amir by not telling them that they are actually brothers. When Hassan and Amir were children they treated each other like friends not knowing that they were actually brothers. Rahim and Baba keeping this information from them was a form of betrayal because if they knew their lives might have been differently. Amir might have treated Hassan better and he might have came to Hassan's rescue which would have completely changed both of their lives for the better. In this story there are many forms of betrayal, but I think these are the biggest forms that play the most vital role in shaping the story. | ![]() |
